How to Know When Your Transmission is in Need of Repairs

There are a lot of parts in your Jaguar model that absolutely must be working properly for your vehicle to function, and the transmission is one such part that many people may not completely understand. At our service center, customers often ask us, "What does the transmission actually do?" so, to help everyone, we'll explain it simply and let you know how to tell if your transmission is in need of repairs or not.

What Does the Transmission Do?

The job of the transmission is to send the proper amount of power to the wheels so you can control your speed. Similar to the gears on a bicycle, your vehicle's transmission must shift up for higher speeds and down for lower speeds; if the transmission doesn't work, like if your bicycle's chain is disconnected from the gears, you won't be going anywhere.

How Can I Tell if My Transmission Needs Repairs?

There are a number of signs to look out for when it comes to transmission trouble. Here are five signs you need transmission maintenance:

  • If your automatic transmission feels like it's changing gears randomly as you drive, for no reason you can discern, then you may be in need of some transmission repair.
  • Rough shifting between gears, potentially with an audible thud or clunk sound.
  • A long pause between Park and Drive where the engine revs but you can't move, may be indicative of transmission problems.
  • Bright red, dark red, or brown liquid leaking from your engine while parked.
  • Any of the above paired with the "check engine" light being illuminated

If any of the above applies to your driving experience, we urge you to schedule a service appointment with us here in Thousand Oaks, CA. Whether you're from Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Malibu, or anywhere beyond, we'd love nothing more than to give you the excellent automotive assistance you deserve.
